My teaching philosophy is firmly planted in the fertile ground of innovation, inclusivity, and interdisciplinary exploration. With a vibrant history of guiding both undergraduate and graduate students through the nuanced landscapes of graphic design, my approach is both reflective of the dynamic changes in our field and pluralism of the future directions design might take.
I am committed to fostering a learning space that champions diversity, equity, and inclusivity, where every student is encouraged to explore and express their unique perspectives. By urging students to draw from their personal narratives and the multifaceted world around them, I aim to ignite a passion for creative inquiry and innovation. This approach not only empowers students to transcend traditional boundaries but also equips them with the critical thinking and problem-solving skills necessary to navigate and influence a rapidly changing societal and design landscape.
The integration of technology in education is a cornerstone of my teaching methodology. Leveraging my passion for cutting-edge tools and methods, I create immersive learning experiences that transcend traditional classroom boundaries. Projects that combine the physical with the digital, such as transforming everyday objects into virtual reality letterforms or utilizing artificial intelligence to create designs, are examples of how I encourage students to embrace and harness technological advancements. This approach not only demystifies the latest tech but also instills a sense of confidence and competence in navigating the future of design.
Understanding our field's history is crucial. I aim to foster a deep respect for graphic design and typography's roots among my students, enriching their work with historical depth. This foundation, combined with skills in modern media, enables them to create innovative designs. My teaching emphasizes self-awareness, unique voices, and collaboration. Encouraging students to explore diverse perspectives and challenge norms, I inspire them to bring novel ideas to design discourse. As an educator, my greatest privilege is learning alongside the new generation of designers. Guiding them toward a future where they can leverage their unique talents and perspectives to drive innovation and impact in the graphic design field is the essence of my teaching philosophy. It's not merely about preparing students for what's to come; it's about inspiring them to shape the future of design themselves.
